Workforce Skills Development

Ready To Work

Ready-to-Work is a nationally recognized program that has helped thousands of unemployed individuals prepare for careers in Tourism and Hospitality over the past 12 years. Through an exciting mix of classroom and on-the-job training, participants build the knowledge, skills and attitude to pursue rewarding careers in this exciting sector.

OTEC has delivered Ready-to-Work for youth and other target groups throughout the Province. The most recent project, Ready-to-Work: Tourism Careers for Internationally Trained Individuals (ITI’s) was specifically designed to serve new immigrants. Over the past two years, the project helped over 180 ITI’s successfully transition into the Ontario workforce. The program was free for permanent residents or convention refugees with a work permit. This project also assisted employers seeking to expand their workforce with qualified applicants.

Ready-to-Work ITI’s is a partnership with four organizations that have significant experience with immigrant communities across Ontario. They include:

  • ACCES in Toronto and Mississauga
  • KEYS Employment Services in Kingston
  • Niagara Employment Help Centre in Niagara Falls
  • Unemployed Help Centre of Windsor Inc. in Windsor
  • YMCA-YWCA in Ottawa

The 4-week Bridging Program has Four Major Components:

  • Industry Specific Classroom Training
  • Workplace Communication Training
  • Industry specific exam and certification opportunities
  • Employment opportunity with a sponsoring employer

Ready-to-Work participants complete the program with marketable certifications such as:

  • Tourism Essentials
  • Service Excellence
  • Smart Serve
  • Food Safety Training Program
  • WHMIS

Certifications can be substituted to suit specific occupations.

Ready-to-Work has been funded by the Government of Ontario and supported by the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC).
