Applying for a Social Insurance Number (S.I.N.)

Every temporary foreign worker must apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon arrival in Ontario. Upon completion of the application, a TFW will receive a SIN that begins with a '9', denoting that the number is temporary and has been issued to a non-Canadian citizen/permanent resident.  The card will be valid for a specific time frame and the expiry date will be noted on the front of the card; the expiration date will correspond with the expiration date listed on their work permit.

Download the SIN application form here or on the Service Canada website.

To complete the application process, applicants must provide a Primary Document that proves their identity and status in Canada, as well as a Supporting Document, if the name on the primary document is different from the one they are currently using.

Primary Documents (provide ONE of the following):

  • Work permit/employment authorization
  • Study permit/student authorization AND a Contract of Employment (from a learning institution)
  • Visitor record indicating eligibility for work in Canada

TIP – Provide original documents (not copies) which must be written in English or French.

Supporting Documents:
If the name on the primary document differs from the name the individual is now using, they must submit one of the following documents.  Documents must be originals and will be returned after the application process is complete.

  • Marriage certificate or marriage registration – this is valid to change their surname
  • Divorce decree – this document is valid to remove their spouse’s surname for a change in the surname only
  • Legal change of name document – this document is a certificate or a court order issued further to a provincial change of name act or under similar legislation

Individuals are encouraged to apply for their SIN in person at a Service Canada Centre, where a Citizen Service Agent will process the application online. In-person applications are processed more quickly and do not require individuals to part with valuable identity documents.   If both the application and appropriate documentation are in order, a SIN number will be issued immediately, with the SIN card to follow within 5 working days.
