OTEC Fact Sheet

HISTORY & OVERVIEW

OTEC is an independent, not-for-profit Training and Human Resource Solutions organization. The company evolved from the 2005 consolidation of the Ontario Tourism Education Corporation (OTEC) established in 1991, and Customer Service Excellence Corporation (CSEC), established in 2001. OTEC is provincially registered as the Ontario Tourism Education Corporation.

Originally created to address the human resource needs of Ontario’s Tourism and Hospitality Industry, OTEC acts as a liaison between industry, education, government and labour. As the coordinating body addressing the vital human resource issues facing the Tourism and Hospitality Industry, the organization is not membership-based, but works with other associations and partners to serve the human resource needs of their memberships and clients. Funding for OTEC began with federal and provincial public sector money, combined with private sector investments of time and involvement.

OTEC is Ontario’s representative on the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC), the national sector council for tourism, funded by Human Resources Development Canada. CTHRC brings together all the provinces and territories to coordinate tourism training efforts across Canada. The administration of national programs, the sale of federally developed training materials based on nationally recognized standards, coupled with the fulfillment of federal contracts provided to OTEC by the CTHRC, provides some of the project funds for the Corporation.
